Juliet's stage shows

Juliet started performing these shows live on stage in late 1981, and continued well into 1987, even after she had ceased her involvement in the film business. Whenever possible she liked to follow each show with a question-and-answer session with the audience about the X-rated film business.

Cassie the Cook
To the tune of "Too Many Cooks" I enter in a cute, sexy dress, cook's apron and chef's hat, carrying a big bowl in which I am stirring cake batter. Then I chat with the audience about the relationship between food and sex.. and then with some fruit to prove my point... a humorous demonstration of creative ways to "play with your food." While my cake is baking I proceed with a further demonstration of my culinary skills ... the cookbook strip.

Chris the Carpenter
To the cacophony of construction, traffic and city sounds, I enter dressed in faded jeans, flannel shirt, work boots, hard-hat, work gloves and a carpenter's belt laden with tools. I have a 2X4 over my shoulder and a lunch pail in my hand. I measure, hammer nails, etc. until the lunch whistle blows. Out of my lunch pail I take a sandwich, thermos and sex magazine. Looking at a picture of a couple making love turns me on, which prompts a unique strip out of my work clothes to reveal feminine, lacy undies. A provocative and torrid dance follows.

The Executrix
As Dolly Parton belts out "Working Girl" I enter dressed in a stylish suit carrying a briefcase. It is the end of another tough day climbing the corporate ladder. Now at home I start to unwind with the help of a glass of wine (grape juice in a wine bottle). Starting to disrobe, I get a gleam in my eye and my strip gets more provocative. When all my everyday business clothes are off, I get a wicked grin on my face and begin my transformation from the "nice girl" into the strong, sexy dominatrix in black leather and lace, brandishing a riding crop, prowling the stage looking for "boys" to play with.

Nurse Naughty
To the sounds of a car crash, sirens and emergency room procedures, I enter, dressed in a nurse's outfit. I go into the audience and take temperatures, heart beats, etc., to locate the "patient." When it is discovered that it is I who have a fever, I suggest undressing to lower my temperature. I perform a slow, sensuous strip, revealing white undergarments. I proceed with floor and chair work and perform with oral expertise on a large syringe.

Suzy the Secretary
To the strains of Leroy Anderson's "Typewriter Song," I enter wearing a conservative suit and horn-rimmed glasses, and carrying a steno pad. I type and take dictation. The phone rings. It is a friend of mine who recognizes that beneath my prim exterior is a very passionate woman. He invites me over for dinner and tells me to "think sexy." This gets me excited and initiates my steamy strip, erotic dance and creative dalliance with the telephone.

The White Widow (butterfly)
The stage is dark. The music starts its slow, dramatic buildup. A dim spotlight building to full brightness reveals the back of a motionless, black-caped and hooded figure standing center stage. I slowly turn and walk toward the audience. In a well choreographed and scored performance, I incorporate dramatic tension with eroticism to produce an original, powerful and exotic strip and dance of mourning transformed into freedom and joy.

Juliet's massage work

After Juliet withdrew from the porn film business in 1985, she took up massage therapy as her new career. With her inherent sensuality and love of touching and being touched, she was a natural, and it was not long before she started blending massage with her previous sex-work career, incorporating erotic touch into her bodywork practice, for those clients who wanted it.

In 1990, Juliet named her unique approach to erotic massage Tender Loving Touch:

What is Tender Loving Touch? It's difficult to describe in words a technique that is experiential and unique to each person, but I'll do my best.

Let me start by telling you what Tender Loving Touch is NOT. It is not erotic massage; it's not a quick fix because you are horny; it's not intercourse and it's not Tantra. Tender Loving Touch focuses on slow, gentle, nurturing touch from head to toe, letting you relax into an altered state. It is a delightful, sensual/sexual experience in which we are both nude, in my bedroom, and I stroke you lightly with my whole body, not just my hands. Your genitals get special attention. You can either lie back and only receive, or reciprocate by touching me, so that you learn not only to receive, but to give erotic pleasure—pleasure that is an end in itself, not a prelude to genital sex.

Remembering Juliet

From her fan letters:

Juliet brought style, elegance and great sensibility to her performances... and to her characters, a quality of knowing enthusiasm and experience that so many of the other actresses lacked. She exuded a sense of self-confidence. No one else has come close to meeting that mark... Juliet seemed to be saying to the viewer: "Hey, I'm doing what I love, and there just happens to be a camera around."

Greg Franke, Juliet's longtime friend and hairdresser

Juliet was an innate performer. Entering a room and feeling eyes seek her out, she literally lit up like a beacon. She found delight in all aspects of life, from the sublime to the mundane. Silk on skin, a beautiful orchid—or man or woman, a string quartet, walking in nature: all fueled her insatiable lust for life.

Annie Sprinkle , Juliet's friend and collaborator

Juliet was filled with passion—for life, love and the pursuit of pleasure. She was a great sex goddess pioneer who is sorely missed, but not forgotten. Juliet is of the spirits and she is nearby, showing off her alabaster breasts.

Kay Taylor Parker, Juliet's friend and co-star

Juliet was a Sister Spirit in so many ways: complex, sensitive and committed to her work to elevate sexual consciousness. We only came to know and understand each other later on after I ended my film career, but I grew to love and admire her for her courage and willingness to honor her Soul's journey as I do mine. Her dance continues in the stars.

Speakers at the Harmony Center for the Joyful Spirit memorial, 17 January 2010

I remember being impressed by her grace in dancing and [her] lovely manner.

I will actually miss her setting conditions for everything. I expect when I am in my 70's I will be as unwilling to compromise as she was.

Juliet was so vibrantly alive, still enjoying all of life...still young enough for loving... How beautiful she looked, how she loved doing the flowers for the Sunday ceremony, and of course, her joyous dancing.

I will always remember her smiling face... Juliet was a wonderful person, cheerful and friendly. She loved people and people loved her.

She blazed a little-trodden trail in the adult film industry, being the first "older woman" to star in adult films in the ten years between her fortieth and fiftieth birthdays. And for the next twenty-one years of the life that ended this week, she continued to be a cheerleader in the celebration of the vibrant sexuality of older women.

Juliet's biographer

Marian Rhys was a phone-sex operator for 28 years, from 1987 to 2015.  She met Juliet Anderson through the sex-worker support group Cyprian Guild, the successor to COYOTE (Call Off Your Old, Tired Ethics), founded by Margo St. James.  After Juliet died, Marian decided to write her biography, as she knew that Juliet had long wanted to write her own story.

It was through this writing that Marian came to know and love Juliet much better than she had when Juliet was still with us.  Marian feels, as Juliet did, that sex work is the most honorable and meaningful work that she has ever done.

Marian also worked as an art model, another job she loved, although her main income over the years came from mainframe computer programming and technical writing—other jobs that require creativity and flexibility.

Marian feels blessed and honored to have had the opportunity to engage in sex work, to have known Juliet, and to bring Juliet's story to the world.  She hopes that readers will come to appreciate Juliet in all her complexity, and maybe learn something about life, love and lust, along the way.
